Do you have a curiosity in a new career? I have a few tips and trick to help you be curious about your new career.
Use the 5 Whys Model
This model is simple and effective if you want to get to the heart of a problem. Here is a conversation that I have had with a client.
Q: Why are you curious about a new career?
A: I want to see what is out there and maybe do something new.
Q: Why do you want to do something new?
A: I am not sure. But I am feeling a bit bored with my current job.
Q: Why do you feel bored?
A: I think it is certain parts of the role that are too easy for me now as I have been doing the role for so long.
Q: Why have you been doing the role for so long?
A: I like the company and I really like the people I work with. I am happy doing what I am doing but I want to be more challenged.
Q: Why don’t you speak to your manager about that?
A: I could do that! I could ask for more responsibility.
Using the 5 why’s can unlock thoughts and feeling that you didn’t realise you had. It can make you realise some uncomfortable truths but also some easy wins.
Career Skills Audit
Make an assessment of your current skills in a career skills audit. I like to use an old job description and therefore look at the skills needed in my old job and compare them to the skills I need in a new or ideal role. That can make it a good comparison.
I also ask a trusted colleague to review my thinking and give me honest feedback. This way I can get a steer on if I am demonstrating the skills to the level I think I am.
Here is an external company who can offer you a free online audit . This career test audits 10 skills areas:
- Numerical
- Information Technology
- Managing Self
- Communication Skills
- Customer Focus
- Team Working
- Managing Others
- Influence and Persuasion
- Commercial Awareness
- Personal Development Planning
Plan
After a skills audit, you come up with a plan!
- What is missing?
- Where can you get the experience?
- Who can help you learn the skill?
- How can you get training in the new skill?
Clients and I have created skills plans in lots of different areas for example:
- Diversity Skills – she set up a workshop and led the new team on diversity to learn new skills and have some experience in diversity.
- German Language Skills – she enrolled in a immersion course for 3 months to have the certificate to prove her language skills.
