Coaching for Business is always a difficult thing to explain to people when I tell them what I do.
I was happy to discuss with my little coaching Masterclass the idea of coaching for athletes vs. coaching for business. We were discussing the ideas of ex athletes need support in their business lives and one of the mastermind group specialises in this type of coaching. She is an ex athlete herself.
We discussed how people can make a referral to us in a world where showing any vulnerability can be a real sign of weakness. We discussed that people:
- Don’t want to admit that we are supporting them
- Don’t want to recommend us in case they offend someone!
So what do you do?
I was delighted to be told the phrase that was a light bulb moment for me:
Professional Athletes need coaches, so why wouldn’t you?
Everyone can benefit from having coaching. They are the people that are looking for a return on investment:

- a new job,
- a transformation of their business revenue from x to y, or
- a career jump
Does this chime with you?
So where is coaching for athletes vs. coaching for business the same?
I can’t take the penalty or the try or the goal but I am like the Sports Coach to a professional athlete. I am there for the training room, the hours of practice and then on the sidelines for the big match.
Coaching helps evaluate your performance. We offer resources, frameworks and support to give you a field of freedom to play on.
The vast open field of freedom before us is daunting. It lacks clear arrows or mountains representing some direction with a pot of gold at the end. We are exposed to the elements and our voice echos when yelling forward. We have a choice to make; embrace this freedom or simply fear it.

Only the best people benefit from having Coaching?
Not really – everyone can benefit from coaching in sports and in coaching for business!
We have long recognised that children (and adults) can improve in their sport when they have coaching and training. So someone giving you practice drills, watching how you perform in those drills and offering feedback are totally transferable skills with both types of coaching.
Business ROI
I never make promises. I know that just like Sports Coaches, I can’t take the goal, but I can suggest that the balanced scorecard can be improved. I typically work with clients who will get the next job, offer dramatic improvements to the organisation or offer real financial savings as their thinking deepens and improves.
